The Secret Coast Expedition 2018
Our 24-day hiking expedition will take place on the rugged, surf-washed outer coast of northern Vancouver Island in June, 2018. We aim to become the first people ever to connect the Tatchu, Nootka and Hesquiaht Trails along northern Vancouver Island’s remote and rugged outer coast, as a single hiking journey.
We will access our start and end points by floatplane out of Gold River, through Air Nootka. The route is in three stages, and we will need water transport to connect those three segments (we’re still working on that).
Tatchu Peninsula: Rugged Point to Port Eliza, 32 km, 6-7 days
Nootka Island: Tongue Point to Friendly Cove, 35 km, 5-6 days
Hesquiaht Peninsula: Burdwood Point to Cougar Annie’s Garden, 55 km, 10-11 days
The principal objectives of this expedition are about exploration rather than speed – learning about and from the traditional Nuu-chah-nulth inhabitants, exploring their rich history and the true wildness that few parts of our planet still offer.
