Port Alberni BC
Port Alberni is a deep sea port in the middle of the West Coast of Vancouver Island and offers the traveler a wonderful home base while exploring the area. Known as the gateway to the west coast of Vancouver Island, Port Alberni was once the wealthiest settlement in Canada and the plentiful natural resources drove the economy. Today it’s still a working port and the area is enjoying some revitalization to help support a better visitor experience.
Almost destroyed by a tsunami in 1967, it’s hard to imagine today that a wall of water travelled all the way from Alaska and down this Inlet. Today you'll find various museums and galleries offering a wealth of historical information and several shops where local artists display their talents for sale.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find unparalleled fishing, kayaking, scuba diving, hiking, biking and endless opportunities throughout the Valley. You`re guaranteed raging rivers, waterfalls and huge trees, slugs the size of toddlers and magic.
One of our favorite family trips is to McLean Mill which is Canada’s only operating steam powered sawmill and worth stopping for a train ride and tour.
Please keep in mind wildlife is abundant and you should be bear and cougar aware before setting out.
