U'mista Cultural Society

When enslaved Kwakwaka'wakw people somehow made it back to their homes, they were said to have u'mista. There is no more appropriate name for this museum.

For several decades the Kwakwaka'wakw people fought to have their sacred regalia returned from museums and private collections throughout the world. They were successful and are displaying most of the sacred regalia at the U'mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay. These priceless artifacts have greater impact as viewed in the heart of this community than anywhere else.
