The Earl Block

The Earl Block was built in 1888 and is an example of the Italianate style of building that was popular in the late 19th century. 

The completion of the E & N Railway and the expansion of No. 1 Coal Mine precipitated an economic boom in Nanaimo. The Earl Block was built for commecial purposes and you can't help but notice that the building wraps around a significant corner. Here you can still find incredible ornamental detailing and the arched second story windows let the light flood in and must have kept the occupants well abreast of the activity in the streets below. 

Today Perkin's Coffee holds court in this beautiful heritage building and it is there that you can still see some fantastic interior details.
