Originally built in 1887, The Globe faces the Nanaimo Harbour and stands today as a landmark. An addition to the rear of the building was added in 1916 and an installation of Art Deco floor tiles in 1936. With its prominent location on the high side of Front St., it enjoyed harbour views and easy access to everything.
The Globe was run by the Martin family, and housed their servants, miners, cigar makers and other interesting characters through the years. Noted local architects worked on some of the renovations and fine features include an excellent example of 1930's tile work on the face of the building. This gorgeous detail should be pointed out so that you can enjoy the rich colours and art deco sensibility.
