A. R. Johnson & Co. Grocers
Angus R. Johnson was a pioneer grocer in Nanaimo and this site was where he conducted his business. Mr. Johnson and his family also managed Hirst's Wharf, Johnston's Wharf and the Nanaimo Wharf Company. Many merchants in those days had to rely on water transportation so location was key to the grocers success.
Today the premises are occupied by the Flying Fish, an upscale decor boutique. It is here that you will find some of the original fixtures, floors and walls. Much of the old grocery's character has been removed from the outside and therefore it is not visually recognized as a heritage site at first.
My suggestion is this, walk down Bastion St. towards the Harbour. This takes you down the left side of the building where you can notice the beautiful tilework on the threshold of their side door. Carry on to the alley and enjoy the back of the building. Remember that you were once at the shoreline.
